Notes and Observations

Shoreline Reflection (7 x 9)

(reverse of Young Woman with Mantilla)
This reflection in water mirrors the finesse of Homer’s 1878 watercolor Pond and Willows, Houghton Farm; and here in conjunction with can be seen to foreshadow darker waters such as 1891’s Mink Pond. The observation of light delineating the shoreline foliage is executed in the reserve technique (no color, just white paper). This same effect, rendered in gouache (opaque white), is observable in Homer’s 1878 watercolor Bo-Peep.
